O’Shaughnessy Selected to Officiate at the 2018 FIL World Field Lacrosse Championships

New Brunswick Referee, Steve O’Shaughnessy, has been selected as an official for the 2018 FIL World Field Lacrosse Championships in Netanya, Israel this summer. O’Shaughnessy will be refereeing in the Red Division of the tournament. “It is an honour and privilege to be selected to represent Canada at a World Championships” said O’Shaughnessy. “The selection process includes multiple levels including Rule Knowledge, Fitness and Game officiating, so it is an accomplishment to be selected.”

O’Shaughnessy has been officiating Box and Field Lacrosse for over 27 years now. Steve also sits on the Canadian Lacrosse Associations Board of Directors as Director of Domestic Development. He got his start in refereeing from a friend who recruited him into Lacrosse officiating, as they needed new referees. “Having played as a kid, I had wanted to get back involved; this was a good opportunity,” said O’Shaughnessy.

As lacrosse continues to grow and develop in New Brunswick the need for more officials becomes imperative. When asked if he had any advice for current or former lacrosse players who would like to get involved in officiating Steve said, “Lacrosse is a unique and fast game, “the fastest on two feet”, so those who have played have a distinct advantage in knowing the game as a player. So, officiating can be a way to learn the game from a different angle, but also as a way to give back to the game as well.”
